Bio
Creating what Iggy Pop described to Jim Jarmusch as “symphonies for people that don’t have a lot of time,” Sarah Lipstate has emerged as an innovative and defining voice in the world of music under the name Noveller. Wielding a guitar as her main instrument, Lipstate has pioneered a transcendent approach to composition through her mastery and integration of effects pedals and technology. Forming unexpected sonic routes, her songs are vivid and cinematic, telling intricate tales with each tone and swell.
With her ability to add such unique sounds and textures, Lipstate has been sought out as a frequent collaborator, recently writing songs with Iggy Pop and performing as a member of his band on his worldwide tour. Past partners in crime have ranged from JG Thirlwell to Lee Ranaldo and she has performed as part of Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Army, Nick Zinner’s “41 Strings”, Ben Frost’s “Music for 6 Guitars”, and Glenn Branca’s 100 guitar ensemble. She has also toured in support of big fans in St. Vincent, Wire, U.S. Girls, The Jesus Lizard and Helium.
Those prized abilities have also led her to her being a leader in the conversation around the gear that has unlocked the full range of her abilities. As she began posting videos of her explorations to social media, a dedicated and inquisitive audience emerged and continues to grow, as she appeared in magazines and documentaries. With Arrow, Lipstate has emerged with an album that is sure to delight and challenge all of her followers, as that fanbase widens further.

NOVELLER PERFORMS AT THE GETTY, SEPTEMBER 7TH
From The Getty’s website:
Celebrate California plant culture with a special program inspired by 1970s Los Angeles and Plantasia, the iconic album made for plants and the people who love them. Worldwide curiosities guide Atlas Obscura and Brooklyn's Sacred Bones Records teams up with the Getty's Ever Present series to delve into the plant-centric cultural movement behind Mort Garson's 1976 cult-classic electronic album Mother Earth's Plantasia. Join us for a day filled with music, workshops, and presentations that explore the influence of plants on art and culture in Los Angeles.
Originally recorded in Los Angeles, and recently reissued by Sacred Bones, Plantasia includes such songs as "Symphony For A Spider Plant," and "A Mellow Mood For Maidenhair." The album's cult status grew over the years due to its rarity—it was only distributed to customers at the legendary Mother Earth Plant Boutique then located on Melrose Avenue.
The album will be streaming all day for a unique listening experience in the Getty's Robert Irwin-designed Central Garden, serenading its blooms and bushes with its "warm earth music." On the courtyard stage, a lineup of electronic experimenters perform their take on music for plants. They include New York-based Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, known for composing with plant-based bio data, ambient guitarist Noveller, Florist's Emily A. Sprague, Lucky Dragons, and Gregg Kowalsky—all performing amid a custom stage installation by Hand & Rose.
Additional programming includes presentations by Lyra Kilston, author of Sunseekers: The Cure of California, on L.A.'s early vegetarian evangelists, and film writer Kier-La Janisse on the preoccupation with plant life in 1970's horror films. Pioneering synthesizer company Moog, creators of the modular instrument Mort Garson used to compose Plantasia, will install two self-driven interactive synthesizer workstations where visitors can experiment with electronic music. Also on hand: legendary Los Angeles green thumb Mickey Hargitay of Mickey Hargitay Plants hosts succulent care and macramé workshops, artist Jacqueline Caste demonstrates "Kirlian," or plant-aura photography, garden-inspired cocktails, and more.
NOVELLER announces new full-length album 'A pink sunset for no one' out february 10th, 2017 on fire records
‘A Pink Sunset For No One’ is the eighth studio album from Noveller, the solo electric guitar project from US composer and filmmaker.
One of the most adept guitarists of our time, Lipstate returns with her signature breathtaking cinematic, experimental soundscapes. Eloquent and striking, her instrumentals evoke colourful and otherworldly imagery. Lipstate writes in majestic, emotional strokes with pieces ranging from remarkably tense environments to shimmering psychedelic rock or unravelling into something darker.
Inspired, in part, by her recent Iggy Pop tour, the hypnotic and uplifting opening track ‘Deep Shelter’ was written before she hit the road. Following her incredible time on the road she found solace in writing music after a difficult time returning to everyday life which resulted in two new tracks ‘Corridors’ and ‘Another Dark Hour’ – both of which have become a favourite to play as part of Noveller’s daily guitar regime.
‘Rituals’ is Lipstate’s own tribute to one of her all-time favourite albums Steve Reich’s ’Music for 18 Musicians’ and ‘The Unveiling’ takes a melody from one of her recent film scores giving it longer life within this composition.
Sarah Lipstate has been recording music under the moniker of Noveller for over a decade. In addition to her large catalog of solo work, she has been a member of both Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Army and Glenn Branca’s 100 Guitar Ensemble, collaborated with Lee Ranaldo, Carla Bozulich and JG Thirlwell. The artist has also scored a number of feature and short films along with Radiolab’s live show with Glenn Kotche (Wilco) and Darin Gray. Following 2015’s ‘Fantastic Planet’, the musician was invited to tour with Iggy Pop across the US and Europe.

With their signature blend of storytelling, science, and music, hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich romp through hundreds of millions of years of history to arrive at the end, again and again.”
